Food-approved gloves – Guide to nitrile and disposable gloves

Choose gloves for food according to the specific use and the product's documentation — not only by color, material or price. This guide helps buyers in restaurants, commercial kitchens, catering and food production to go from a work task to a settled purchase.

See disposable gloves in nitrile, latex and vinyl or go directly to nitrile gloves and current pack sizes. The categories show the range; suitability for food contact must be checked for the individual model.

What does food-approved gloves mean?

Gloves for handling unpackaged food must be suitable for food contact. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration's hygiene guidelines describe that this must be evident from the gloves, packaging or other documentation. A general description such as “blue nitrile” is not sufficient documentation for a specific product.

Ask for information for the exact item number and check the restrictions of use. Food contact materials must be used for what they are intended for and according to the labeling and instructions for use.

Five information before ordering

  1. The work task: What will the employees handle, prepare or pack?
  2. The type of food: Describe the relevant raw materials and finished products rather than simply writing "kitchen".
  3. Terms of use: Inform expected contact and temperature, and have any restrictions confirmed.
  4. Model and fit: Indicate item number, desired sizes and number of employees.
  5. Quantity and packaging: Calculate the need for individual gloves, and check the number per box and package.

Save the supplier's documentation on the product card. If the application or model changes, the suitability must be checked again.

Nitrile, latex or vinyl?

Begin by clarifying which specific glove models meet your food contact requirements. Then compare fit, sizes, pack count and price. The material name alone cannot determine suitability.

Gloves do not replace hand washing

The Food and Drug Administration's guidance emphasizes that gloves do not replace hand washing. Nor is there a general requirement to use gloves when handling unpackaged food. Improper use can spread contamination between work tasks.

Therefore describe hand washing, use and changing of gloves in the company's hygiene procedures. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and don't let price or purchasing calculations determine how long a glove can be used.

Price per glove and reorder

A box of 100 individual gloves does not contain 100 pairs. Compare packages on the same unit and VAT basis, and include freight and any requirements for the entire package.

Use the free shopping sheet to compare offersonce the suitability of the products has been clarified. If the quantity must be calculated first, there is a separate guide for glove consumption and reordering.

Find the range or get the documentation clarified

See nitrile gloves and current prices or compare all disposable gloves.

If the documentation for your task is missing, then contact Nordic Safety with item number, food type, work task and quantitybefore you decide. A placement in the range is not in itself an approval for every food task.
